Torrance is where Amai began. Vicki Vo and Edward Chiang opened this Anza Avenue shop around 2022 and ran it on its own for two years before the group expanded, and it is still the location that leans hardest into tea, with milk teas, fruit teas and boba sharing the board with the matcha. The house coffee is slow-dripped through a Vietnamese phin, and the ube, cream puff and sea salt foams are whipped in house for each drink. On the matcha side the sweet builds are the reason to come: Banana Cream Matcha with banana chips on top, Mango Sticky Matcha finished with coconut cream, and the Matcha Einspanner under sweet foam and a dusting of matcha powder. Doors open at 7am on weekdays and 8am at weekends, closing at 7pm daily. First Flight is the other Torrance address on this site and takes a far more austere line on matcha, which makes the pair genuinely instructive; we would do Amai second, because the contrast is what teaches you your own preference.
