Alfred is the coffee bar that hung "But First, Coffee" on a wall in 2013 and watched the line become shorthand for a Los Angeles morning. Josh Akhtarzad opened the first one that January in an alley off Melrose Place and named it after Bruce Wayne's butler. What gets us is how early Alfred was on matcha. Akhtarzad says they were one of the first coffee shops in the city to put it on a menu, more than ten years ago, and the range shows it. The POG Matcha floats matcha over a passionfruit and guava juice base, finished with orange. The Matcha Cloud Cream arrives under vanilla cloud cream in organic dairy or coconut, the Matchaga folds in chaga and lion's mane mushroom, and the lavender latte is built on housemade lavender syrup with a tea of French lavender and butterfly pea. The tins on the retail shelf are a custom blend made for Alfred by Café Matcha, freshly milled in Kyotanabe in Kyoto Prefecture. Akhtarzad came to coffee from finance, with a Yale economics degree and a spell trading at Kayne Anderson before an MBA at UCLA Anderson, and the brief he set was a neighborhood coffee shop for LA with a splash of personality. Twenty-five Alfred cafes now run across Los Angeles, with more in Austin, San Francisco, Riyadh and Kuwait City, and in late 2025 the company opened Café Matcha in Studio City, an espresso-free sibling built entirely around the leaf.
